It's taken the first 3 days of being here for me to realize we won't be here for only 3 days. My first 72 hours in San Francisco have been a mix of typical visit and settling in. The usual list of Happy Hour @ Lucky 13, show @ Shoreline, and Phish Phry @ J&B has been replaced with paper towels, tissues, plywood and groceries. There isn't the same sense of urgency to spend every last second seeing as many people as possible. We have time. We're even thinking of hosting a gathering once the lists get a little shorter.
We're not worried about how the pets are doing at my parents' house. We're instead making sure that Daisy doesn't run out the front door and down the alley again or Sebastian doesn't try to sneak out the screen-less windows again. The uphills really aren't that bad once the lungs catch up, but the downhills have reminded my legs that there are muscles on the front side too. 5:30am seems like a normal time for my body to wake up.
Baseball games start at 4pm out here and on Christmas-like days, 10am. I'm already excitedly awaiting football season. I've already started streaming NY sports radio. Hey, I am all for local stuff (I'm eating avocado like they're peanut butter cups) , but you're crazy if you think I am listening to Tim Lincecum talk on Mets/Phillies day. Not to mention, Mike and the Maddog are on at 10am. Can you tell that I am excited for sports times on the west coast?
It's probably gonna take a few weeks for me to really feel like I'm going to be here for a while. Currently I feel like I'm on a slowed down version of the usual visit mixed with some of the everyday stuff in NJ.
I love the neighborhood. Jersey City has some late night options, but for the most part is closed by 11 just like Noe Valley. The difference is that across the river JC has NYC. Noe Valley has a bay and then Oakland. Late night doesn't really exist in the same way on the west coast (or at least in SF), but that kinda makes sense since most stuff starts 3 hours later. Of course, there's not a lot that compares to NYC when it comes to excess. Noe feels like a cleaner and more developed JC. It gives me hope that the area we reside in JC can continue to improve. Obviously Noe will have its warts too. They just haven't had an outbreak yet.
So far, I've already shot 9 holes with Ken, Cassidy and Ryan, saw a show, went to a birthday celebration, ate at a local restaurant and found a fun/challenging morning walk to go on with the mutt. Some of these things would happen even if we were here for a weekend. The difference is they'll have the chance to happen multiple times...through and after the adjustment period.
