Our morning started at 6:49am when we sprung out of bed to try to get Phish Hampton tickets through Ticketmaster. If you didn’t know it, Phish is reuniting after 4 years. Funny enough, those shows come at a special time. When they occur, it’ll have been just over 10 years that Jimmy and I met because of them! We were really hoping to get tickets to celebrate that 10 year anniversary so come 7am, we were ready. After only 10 minutes of refreshing online and redialing on the phone numerous times, the show was sold out. We’ve been shut out. We were shut out of both the lottery that was setup for the pre-sale and Ticketmaster! I guess there is still the chance of getting tickets, but after looking at craiglist to see that tickets were going for thousands, I’m not so sure.
After trying for tickets, we grabbed the RV which was parked a few blocks away and hogged the spot out front as well as our landlord’s driveway to load it up. This worked out perfectly. We loaded everything into the RV, showered, ran a few more last minute errands, took Daisy to the dog park one last time and started our travels.
It took at least an hour to get out of the city. We encountered a lot of closed roads due to the Soap Box Derby in Dolores Park so the original (less hilly) route we had planned didn’t work. We were able to get out of the city without taking too many hills which was a good thing. Those SF hills aren’t made for 31 foot RVs, that’s for sure. The trailer hitch would scrap on the street at too steep of an incline or decline which sounds worse than it actually is.
Our plan was to take 101 North up to Petaluma and hop over to 1 from there. We were advised not to drive the RV on 1 leading up to and past Muir Woods. I’ve driven that road in a small car and I agree it was for the best that we not take that route.
As we’re cutting across to 1, we noticed thick fog in the distance. It was a good 50 minutes directly west just to get to 1 so I was hoping the fog wouldn’t put a damper on our views.
Highway 1 hugs the cliffs overlooking the Pacific and does provide beautiful scenery. However, the maximum speed is normally about 30mph and that is in a regular size car. We drove slooooowly for 8 hours to discover that we’d only gone about 100 miles outside of San Francisco. You see, we decided to hop back to 101 after driving hours on 1 to make up for some time lost since the views weren’t great (boo fog!) and it was starting to get dark. We followed signs on this small road that would eventually take us to 101. Though, we didn’t realize that this smaller side road was taking us another way - back down south to meet up with 101 to then come north. We drove over 100 miles out of the way and still landed back within 100 miles of the city. Our broadband card for the laptop wasn't working and our phones didn't get cell reception. We had nothing but the signs to rely on and we chose wrong. Guess who wasn’t too thrilled? ME!
Something in my gut told me that we should have taken 101 to begin with all of the way up, but I didn’t listen to it. I was mad at myself for wasting so much time and gas. I was getting aggravated with Daisy who kept getting her doggie seat belt twisted as she frantically tried to come up front with us. Then, Sebastian lets out a few loud meows and before I know it, he’s puking all over our luggage and boxes in the overhead cabin. All of this was followed by a tumble on my toosh when the RV was in motion which resulted in bruises and a super cranky Jennie.
Now, I know that in the grand scheme of life, none of this matters. No matter how much I tried to make myself snap out of it, no matter how much I thought about how silly I was being, I couldn’t shake it. The fall on my toosh was the last straw. I wanted to stop right then and there and set up camp for the night.
Jimmy insisted we keep going. He’d been driving after all and had his mind made up that even though we were still 4+ hours from our destination for the night, he was going to keep on truckin’. Its 1:15am as I type this and he wasn’t kidding…we’re still on the road and he’s STILL driving. Jimmy gets the gold star for today…not only for having to deal with me, but for having driven all day. I continue to ask if he wants to switch, and he continues to insist that he is fine to keep driving. I’m positive he gets this from his father.
Thankfully, we’re about 45 minutes to an hour from the Crescent City, CA KOA campground which we’ll be calling home for the night. I’m so looking forward to getting there and switching over from driving mode to staying mode. I also can’t wait for dinner. Oh yeah, we haven’t eaten yet! Sounds like PB&J to me.

Wow! Rough day. You know...you could have stayed in San Francisco, I wouldn't have minded!
